The Max Planck Institute for Intelligent Systems (MPI-IS) conducts research to understand the principles of perception, action, and learning in natural and artificial systems that successfully interact with complex environments.

The Haptic Intelligence Department of the institute focuses on understanding haptic (touch-based) interaction by both humans and robots. We draw expertise from biomedical engineering, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, computer science, cognitive science, and other fields. Our current projects range from basic research on the sense of touch to applications in human-computer interaction and human-robot interaction.

The department is looking for an enthusiastic and curious new team member to support our department members and research projects.

We are looking for an

IT administrator (m/f/div), 50-100%

Starting as soon as possible.

Roles & Responsibilities

    • administer computer systems and provide direct support for researchers and staff using Windows, Mac, and Linux
    • administer internal servers, cloud services, storage, and other IT resources
    • provide user support for IT-related systems including robots, motion capture, video conferencing, and audio/visual systems
    • collaborate with scientists by researching, planning, and implementing novel hardware and software solutions for complex research projects
    • purchase, configure, and support hardware and software
    • maintain user directories and inventory of hardware and software assets
    • coordinate with other IT personnel both on campus and at other Max Planck institutes to support shared resources and provide mutual support

Education & Experience

    Applicants should

    • be trained as an IT specialist, hold a bachelor’s degree in computer science, or have an equivalent qualification
    • have good communication skills in English (spoken and written)
    • have knowledge of the Windows, Mac, and Linux operating systems, including installation, security and maintenance for these systems
    • have experience with troubleshooting and customer support
    • have knowledge of networking technologies, Active Directory, and central administration systems such as Microsoft Endpoint Configuration Manager (MECM), Jamf, etc.
    • be familiar with common scientific application software and office products
    • have experience supporting cloud-based communications and collaboration tools
    • have experience supporting a user base of more than 20 employees
    • have experience in programming and debugging applications in common languages and environments (C, Python, MATLAB, bash, ROS, etc.)
    • have an interest in haptics, robotics, or AI, and would be excited to contribute your ideas and skills to our research

The salary is paid in accordance with the collective agreement for the public sector (TVöD Bund) and the collective agreement on the federal pay scale (TV EntgO-Bund), according to your qualifications. This position is initially for 2 years, with the possibility of becoming permanent.
