HPC Systems Engineer (m/f/div)

Roles & Responsibilities

    The position is part of the Central Scientific Facility (CSF) “Scientific Computing” (https://is.mpg.de/scientific-computing), which provides high-performance computing resources and expertise to enable cutting-edge research at the institute. The CSF Scientific Computing team—a tech-loving group that values openness, fresh ideas, and close collaboration—operates a state-of-the-art GPU cluster with more than 1200 GPUs, serving as a critical backbone for advancing ground-breaking research in AI.

    Possible tasks include:

    • Build, administer, optimize, and maintain Linux-based HPC/GPU cluster and storage systems for maximum performance and reliability.
    • Support researchers with software setup, job scheduling, and system optimization.
    • Implement security, data management, and scalable computing solutions in collaboration with research teams.
    • Document configurations and provide user training and support.

Education & Experience

    Required:

    • Strong Linux system administration skills.
    • Strong verbal and written communication skills in English to collaborate with teams and document technical processes.
    • Problem-solving abilities and a collaborative, team-oriented mindset.
    • Degree in Computer Science, IT, or a related field, or equivalent experience.

    Preferred:

    • Familiarity with parallel computing, job schedulers, and high-speed networking.
    • Experience with storage technologies (e.g., Lustre, BeeGFS, NFS).
    • Knowledge of virtualization/containerization (e.g., Docker, Apptainer/Singularity).
    • Automation and configuration management (e.g., Ansible).
    • Programming and scripting skills (e.g., Python, C/C++, Bash).
